Keshet communal settlement
Settling in the Golan
The first settlers were a group of ideologists that wanted to make a statement regarding the Separation Agreement between Syria and Israel. At first they set up lodging in Quneitra, and later when Syria took control of the city, moved to a deserted military base close to the volcano Talia Hill.
Since then Keshet is located at the foot of the Talia Hill, 710 meters above sea level, and offers magnificent views of Mount Hermon from the south, and the Kinneret lake from its north-east.
The name Keshet (Arch) has 2 key meanings that serve as reminders and credit to the first settlers in Quneitra. First Quneitra means 'a small arched bridge, and secondly Keshet in Hebrew stands as the initials of ' Quneitra is ours forever'.
The people of Keshet
Keshet is a communal settlement located in the center of the Golan Heights ridge, and is part of the Golan regional council. Currently there are about 100 families residing in Keshet, Around 20% of them are Native English speakers.
Since the first days of Keshet, during the last days of the Yom-Kippur war, its members' stand point was of Zionism, seeing the importance of rebuilding a new settlement in Eretz Israel.
In addition, the members of Keshet have always seen it as their goal to establish a place of Torah, a settlement which encourages observance of Torah and Halacha throughout all life areas and activities. In accordance with these aspirations, the role of Keshet's Rav holds a significant part in Keshet's members' everyday life.
Educational Institutes and Goals
Keshet members set all educational goals concerning their children and youth in the first place. In all Educational Institutes in Keshet, from Nursery, via kindergarten and all elementary classes, an emphasis is placed upon scholastic excellence and Torah values.
The High-schools' Yeshiva in Hispin which absorbs Keshet's graduates, is located less than 20 minutes from Keshet.
Keshet also offers a variety of after-school activities for its kids, including an after-school Talmud Torah, separated Bnei-Akiva activities for boys and girls, and work in the various agricultural branches in Keshet.
Many Torah lectures, lessons and cultural activities are offered for the adults as well, throughout the week and during weekends. Many members of Keshet take part in the Kollel studies in the pre-military Academy Keshet Yehuda.
Keshet's Economy
Keshet's income is based upon various agricultural branches: growing apples, cherries, mango and dates, running several hen-houses, cow-sheds, and shepherding a few cattle flocks.
Several years ago Keshet opened an enterprise for organic juices, which became a nation-wide success.
Keshet members are also partners in the recreational village 'Keinar' and field-school Keshet-Yonatan, named after Yonatan Woodek who was killed during the Yom-Kippur war.
Keshet is also the home of one of the most successful and biggest Pre-military Academies in Israel - Keshet Yehuda, since 1991.
